Unsplatterpunk
Unsplatterpunk is an exceptionally demanding genre in which to write, requiring an almost impossible balancing act between the disgusting and the morally uplifting.
– Dr. Rafe McGregor, author, criminologist, philosopher, and aesthetic commentator
Douglas J. Ogurek founded the literary subgenre known as unsplatterpunk, which holds positive contents in a vile container. Thus, unsplatterpunk uses splatterpunk conventions (e.g., extreme violence, gore, taboo subject matter) to deliver a positive message.
The term first appeared in January 2015 with the publication of Ogurek’s short story “Save the Dog: An Unsplatterpunk Primer,” included in the 50th issue of Theaker’s Quarterly Fiction (TQF). In February 2017, TQF unveiled the first unsplatterpunk anthology: UNSPLATTERPUNK! September 2018 saw the publication of UNSPLATTERPUNK! 2, the intensified sequel. UNSPLATTERPUNK! 3, published in December 2019, brought the violence and debauchery to new lows, all while continuing to convey a positive message. April 2021 introduced UNSPLATTERPUNK! 4 featuring Rick Saldana's "Boot Camp," the most extreme story in the series. UNSPLATTERPUNK! 5, published in August 2022, continued the moral enlightenment while plunging readers into more pierced skin, more rotting innards, and more soiled undergarments. The most recent installment, UNSPLATTERPUNK! 6, was published in August 2023 and introduced a new batch of gore-infused horror with a positive message. This time, the anthology focused on women who take a stand against men (or stand back as men destroy themselves). Ogurek edited all six anthologies, which are available below. Douglas J. Ogurek, founder of the unsplatterpunk subgenre, delivers a nauseatingly original tale that smothers a positive message in an ultraviolent and ultra-bizarre coating.

Theaker’s Quarterly Fiction, purportedly the UK’s second-longest running sci-fi/fantasy/horror ezine, has opened the floodgates for submissions to the seventh instalment in the UNSPLATTERPUNK! “smearies”.
Brace yourself for shattered teeth, smashed bones, ruptured organs, plucked eyeballs, torn-off limbs, and even spaghettification. It's the sixth chapter in the UNSPLATTERPUNK! series.

Taken together, the stories make a provocative, confrontational, outrageous, and innovative collection.
- Dr. Rafe McGregor, on UNSPLATTERPUNK! 2 anthology
A visceral, funny, and highly entertaining opening tale about a vulture finding their mate over a common interest – dead remains. Deliciously funny and gory – loved it!
- Runalong the Shelves, on "Decomposing Corpses: A Love Story"
This self-referential cruelty-fest in 'Save the Dog' is like Finnegans Wake, with real words inserted here and there to help.

I hope that you come out of this with a different viewpoint on a dog breed you have been scared about, but I also, on a deeper level, hope that you read Ogurek’s work and find a newfound sense of fight.
